Don’t tell us that was any meteor shower! The fact that it’s taken this long for George Takei to be the subject of his very own documentary seems so weird now that he’s the subject of his very own documentary. But To Be Takei is on its way, and, judging from this trailer, it’s SO CUTE.
Do you like Star Trek? ’Cause William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols, John Cho, and more pop up to say wonderful things about Takei and the racial barriers he broke down on television. How about LGBT rights? Because here’s Dan Savage weighing in on Takei’s strides for the gay community. There’s probably also an Internet expert talking about the virality of his delightful “Ohh Myyy” memes and the popularity of his Facebook page.
Plus, you’ve got the man himself offering context in his usual candid, endearing way. Takei’s own commentary ranges from the self-deprecating:
“I was the best helmsman in the galaxy, and put to rest all that stereotype about Asian drivers.”
…to the heartwarming:
“My father told me, ’Look at the kind of roles that Asians have played,’ and I said, ’Daddy, I’m gonna change it.’”
YOU COULD AND YOU DID, GEORGE TAKEI.
Also, he and husband Brad are just too cute, especially with that Fritos bit at the end of the trailer:
To Be Takei comes to theaters August 22, 2014.
